标  题: Princeton vs Berkeley，俺的看法

看了前面几篇关于Princeton与Berkeley的比较，
真是涨了一些见识。
这个问题对俺有现实意义，因为俺正在这两者之间艰苦地抉择。
Princeton是全奖，Berkeley还在讨价还价阶段。
教授不知是真不懂规矩，还是有意。说给我一个GSR，
但又没见到official letter（估计这几天收到）。
不过email倒是又长又猛，中心思想两句话：
1、berkeley是No .1的学校；
2、年轻人别盯着钱。

下面摘自其email，大家一定要读一读，一定。很长见识，
反映了一个米国教授的心目中对米国这些学校的看法，绝对
有参考价值。可惜班主来得不勤，否则一定是要被M上的。

As far as dollar amounts you cannot compare the schools to each
other...Berkeley is subsidized by the government of California while
Harvard and Princeton are private.  You can believe what you read on web
sites if you want ... I have been around and Berkeley is the greatest
university in the world.  In the 1960s the movement started here and
Berkeley remains the innovators.  BSD Unix was evolved here... INGRES,
INFORMIX were born here, SYBase is a few blocks away (all educated
here)..Oracle is across the water (most of them born here).  Computers and
Harvard once spent time together but that was long ago and Harvard is
considered very weak in computers.  Princeton has a supercomputer but not
a super computer program.  If you were as old as me you would understand
where things are made and where things are copied.  I moved to Berkeley
because it was the great institution...I moved away from the IVY league (a
place where people like to get to know each other...not know the future,
not change the way we see, the way we live.  In Berkeley we change things.
WE lost a research grant to Harvard a few years ago.  One referee stated,
"If you want something great, something innovative, something new, then
give the money to Berkeley, however, if all you want is the status quo,
then give the money to Harvard".  they went with the status quo.  More
people on this planet go with the status quo than for innovation.  It is
true...I am 46 years old and I see status quo all over the planet.  You
will live on this planet a short time.  Make a change.

These universities are not a good as Berkeley...that is why I left PENN
and did not take a job serious from YALE.  Berkeley is the birth place of
new ideas...why settle for anything else.  If you want our scholarship and
GSR turned into dollars we can do this...but tuition is subsidized by the
state and the dollars cannot be compared to a private school tuition cost.
It is like comparing apples and oranges.

You are dead wrong here.  there is not an academic in the land that would
put Berkeley in the number 2 spot to any institution.  Berkeley grads get
in because of what they know...they are very smart...not because of who
they know..or how much money their family has.  You had better do more
research on who is reporting what....people get paid money to say someone
is ranked over another.  You had better look at the nobel prize winners.
berkeley has more than all the other universities combined.  berkeley had
36 out of its 37 graduate programs ranked inthe top 10 in the world.  No
other university on the planet has had that.  DO MORE RESEARCH on which is
the best.  Berkeley is the top...that is why I came here. The sports teams
are not very good...but that is not why students come here.

I put journalists and politicians at the bottom of the food chain.  I have
bever been accurately quoted by the press.  Infact their facts are usually
dead wrong.  They want to sell papers, they compete with each other.  Look
at who advertises in USNEWS...where did they go to school and where did
their children go to school.  You cannot buy out Berkeley.
