俺拿到了MIT和Berkeley的offer，因与Berkeley教授信息交流多，
故去信征求意见。教授回信如下，希望对大家有所启发。
I could write for hours about the plus and minus state of Berkeley and
MIT.  I am not sure it would help much.  I will make a few correct
statements below and then ask you to find the truth yourself.  Without the
turth you cannot make the right decision.  Last year a woman from Japan
went to MIT over Berkeley.  I wrote her telling her that what she saw in
the American Movies "Good WIlling Hunting" was just that a movie.  I told
her MIT was a great place 20 years ago but that Silicon Valley and
Berkeley had taken the lead in computing about 10 years ago.  The MIT
Athena project which made it so famous was no longer and it had become the
Berkeley Sequoia 2000 project.  the money had moved west.  DEC computers
had been sold to Compaq, and the world was being run by the west
coast...SUN Microsystems and MicroSoft and Oracle and Sybase, etc.  All
within a few miles of Berkeley.  Why did the Route 128 corridor leave an
go west to SIlicon Valley?  I also told her that CS and the multimedia lab
was the only thing MIT had left and it was declining.  Yet movies still
portray MIT as great.  As a result everyone in Asia, only knowing about
American education from movies, see MIT as the great school.  DO YOUR
HOMEWORK on this one.  Berkeley is the best in the US and you had better
find this out.... The Japan student?..her advisor and I gave a paper inthe
same session only two weeks ago (Her advisor from Japan).  He said she is
miserable and wants to transfer to Berkeley because she realizes MIT is
not what she thought it to be.  The problem is she turned us down and the
university does NOT ALLOW transfers.

DO NOT base yourdecision on one unhappy student at MIT.  DO your
homeowrk...but ask those that are telling you to go to MIT...why MIT?
Make sure they give you more than "itis a great school" because they may
be repeating that from some movie.  Five years from now you will know the
truth for yourself.  You will have either gone to MIT or Berkeley and have
figured out which institution is the greatest.  Remember...Berkeley is a
government run institution in a free and democratic society while MIT is
private (a business).  I cannot expect you to understand free and
democratic but Berkeley is heavily subsidized by the governement while MIT
must turn a profit to survive.  Maybe you should read more deeply into
what I am saying here.
