I cannot offer any words at this juncture. You must follow your heart.
You will realize (once in America) what the difference is between MIT and
Berkeley. In America you can often get into MIT but not often get into
Berkeley. In the world outside of China all the great leaders come from
two schools...Harvard on the right (a school for the few that choose to
take from the poor) and Berkeley on the left (a school that tries to give
to humanity). Which school would Mao have gone to?
I have never laughed at anyone for their choice in life. I am only here
to offer advice, encouragement and suggestions. It is your path, you must
do well as you travel it. You must decide as it is your path, not mine.
Good luck and wisdom in your path decision. Once you choose the path you
will not change. Remember this as it is human nature. There is no
switching paths in mid stream.
Some of the things you observed were correct, your are interested and
interesting. I have a couple of T1 to the backbone of the internet from
my home. I have some protection as I was hacked twice by outsiders who
appeared to be just causing problems at random. I work with a very good
team at the university ... and I have a team of partners that I work with
outside the university. I have been part of three startup computer
companies, some with other professors and some with former graduate
students. There are a few really interesting software utilities in the
world that I had a hand in. Although I could easily be rich I am not. My
mother and father we extremely wise people who instilled in me a couple of
life long things.
We all die some day...sometimes sooner than later.
We can build an empire while we are here but what people would it impress
and would one want to spend an afternoon with them.
We could love our fellow man and help humanity as it attempts to survive
on this space ship earth.
We could have children and love them.
We could love other people's children.
We could spend our time impressing others but down deep you must impress
yourself or you will live a life of hell on earth.
I worked hard to get my PhD and once I got it it meant very little to me
..... but alot to others. I realized my parents were proud of me for
getting the PhD ... but even more proud that it was never a status symbol
to me but rather a phase of understanding in my life. I have been
fortunate to have extremely wise parents. They never once offered their
choice of school to me. They accepted my choices and I was richer for it.
