标 题: APPLICATION SKILL (3) SAVE YOUR MONEY
发信站: BBS 水木清华站 (Wed Nov 12 05:33:46 1997)
Dear Commrades,
Later I will talk about how to save some money in application.
(0) The Principle for saving money.
Do not fear to spend money since you are applying. Once you decide that you must pay
or you are applying a school that you liek best, then just pay as you are required, but
for those school you are applying for fun, save your money is a reasonable task, unless
you are insane or your parents are insane.
In my experience, i have choosed 5 schools which I have sent anything offical, and
paid even cnets required, compared to the other school that I have paid no moeny, 3
out of five gave my admission, but at alst I still chose a school which I have paid no
money at all. So if you really like the school, just pay it, but be aware tha sometimes
you are doing a impossible mission, you need not to pay money for something
impossible at all.
(1) Save money in application fee.
There are a few kinds of schools that you must treat differently.
(a) The school did nto require application fee or you can easily get it waived
including: CMU, Harvard( ask them to waive it), Chicago( Only Physics Divinity),
CUNY, SUNY, The list here is those who are kind last year, for more accurate
information, you should refer to the material you have had recieved.
(b) Graduate school require it but the dept did not require it, you can mail the most imnportnat things, like resume, GRE TOEFL photocopies, Transcript, Photocopies to the
dept. Generally they will require you to mail the refernce letters to the dept, so you
need not worry about them.
(c) Fist processing your applicaiotn and then ask for applicaiton if admitted. Like
Okolahama Univ. utah Univ, etc.
In fact, if you want to save your money, you need to check it by yourself. Read your
materials and be aware that generally the graduate school will ask for the money, but
the dept will not, if you mail the materials to th edept, they will even process them
with out fee, like Stony Brook, But I will not be responsible since situaiton is
changing from year to year, from school to school, from dept to dept.
(2) Save money from ETS.
Ets is always a evil place that will cost you lot of money. But generally speaking, you
will not need to pay them the money unless the school you are applying is damn crazy.
For example, NWU( Noth Western Univ.), Austin( GRE only or toefl only I can not
remember now.), Maryland, etc. You can check it in a very easy way: If they said they
do not accept the copies, that means you need to pay the money to the ETS, otehrwise,
whether they said they need the officail report badly or anything else, donot pay
attention to them at all. In my experience, MIT, Harvard, U of Chicago, etc. have all
rpomise to take my photcopies, in fact the school I am studying in still have no
official report of mine TOEFL and GRE now.
