this year, ABOUT THE $ needed:
1. app. fee:
Usually, u should pay app. fee to 6-15 univ.s( the number depends on
your situation). U can alos send another 10 or so app. materials
without paying the fee. And, u can expect an app. fee waiver from
most 5star and many 4 star univ.s .
e.g.: Rochester, Cornell; CMU; CWRU; Utah; OSU; UPenn; UIUI;...

App. fee = 0--75, mostly 30-50.
Some univ./dept insists on fee as a must: Taxas A&M; UIC(CS);
Indiana(CS); Renesslar(CS); Notre Dame(CS),...

2. scores:
U don't have to send official ETS scores.
Copies are OK. Tell them " I won't joke with my future. I know....."
They will understand u.
And, if u send app. materials early enough, u can contact
them to ask if an official score is a must.

But some univ. insist on official scores as a must. Such as
(CS dept): Upitt, Coll. of William&Mary

IMP. SUGG:
Everything varies. U should pay what u can for what u like.
Never assume that u r always lucky.
