Computer Systems Analysts (2162)
Labour Market Summary
Employment Trends/Outlook
Revised October 1996
Employment growth in this occupation was among the highest in the economy
during the 1980's. This high growth was a result of rapid computerization. To
date, changes in technology have generally worked in favour of programmers,
systems analysts and engineers.
However the move from mainframes to networked microcomputers has resulted in
a change in skill requirements. As firms add more pieces to their corporate
computing systems such as LANs some systems analysts and consultants will
serve as systems integrators, ensuring that the components for diverse
hardware and software perform effectively.
Since a systems analyst's job exposes them to so many different parts of the
company and their contribution is visible and measurable, they may become
candidates for management if they possess appropriate communication and
interpersonal, as well as technical skills. Others take the entrepreneurial
route by starting consulting firms.
Downsizing and restructuring in most industries have had interesting
implications for this occupation. With the elimination of corporate layers,
many managers have had to become their own information brokers out of
necessity. Consequently, it has become even more necessary for systems
analysts to have better communication skills as well as managerial ability
and a knowledge of company organization and objectives since they are being
required to perform strategic as well as technical functions.
Program analysts with current skills are in high demand and will continue to
be so for several years.
In addition to traditional job search resources, the Inter Net has also
become a marketplace for computer systems analysts, with many companies
recruiting directly through their corporate web pages.

Terms and Conditions
Revised October 1996
To be successful in this field, a large amount of time is required to keep
up-to-date on new technologies and their applications.
Systems analysts are employed in an office setting, but hours of work are
often non-traditional. Weekend and evening work may be necessary in order to
meet deadlines.
Technology is making it possible for these individuals to become
telecommuters: working out of the home via the use of a modem.
Consulting and freelance work are areas of growth within this occupation.
Good salaries and good employment opportunities offset the frustration of
program problems and long hours.
