Electrical and Electronics Engineers (2133)
Labour Market Summary
Employment Trends/Outlook
Electrical and electronics engineers are employed primarily in manufacturing
industries, communication and other utility industries, and business service
industries.
Over the longer term, the proliferation of electronics in virtually every
aspect of life and the expansion of the communications infrastructure will
create many more employment opportunities for electronics engineers,
particularly in the areas of communications and control systems, robotics and
instrumentation. Specialists in wireless communications technology are in
particularly short supply.
At the same time, employers are being cautious about taking on new permanent
staff as full-time employee numbers continue to decrease while the number of
contract (and self-employed) engineers is on the rise. High technology
companies however are continuing to hire aggressively.
Demand for electronic and electrical engineers is very strong in this area.
Wage Ranges
Low High
Regular $17.50 $32.74 Hourly
Terms and Conditions
The work setting may be both indoors and outdoors. Although the physical
demands of the work are light, electrical engineers may be exposed to hazards
and therefore must be aware of safety measures. A five-day work week of 37
1/2 to 40 hours is normal.
Indicators
Shortage of skilled or qualified labour
Duties and Requirements
Main Duties
Conduct research into the feasibility, design, operation and performance of
electrical generation and distribution networks, electrical machinery and
components and electronic communications, instrumentation and control
systems, equipment, and components
Prepare material cost and timing estimates, reports and design specifications
for electrical and electronic systems and equipment
Design electrical and electronic circuits, components, systems and equipment
Supervise and inspect the installation, modification, testing and operation
of electrical and electronic systems and equipment
Develop maintenance and operating standards for electrical and electronic
systems and equipment
Investigate electrical or electronic failures
Develop specialized applications and system software
Prepare contract documents and evaluate tenders for construction or
maintenance
Supervise technicians, technologists, programmers, analysts and other
engineers.
Employment Requirements
A bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics engineering or in an
appropriate related engineering discipline is required.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) by a provincial or
territorial association of professional engineers is often required for
employment and to practice as an electrical or electronics engineer.
Engineers are eligible for registration following graduation from an
accredited educational program and after at least two years of supervised
work experience in engineering and, in some provinces, after passing a
professional practice examination.
In some provinces, those who are not graduates of an accredited educational
program are eligible for registration after completing a six to eight-year
term of supervised employment and successfully passing examinations.
In Quebec, membership in the professional corporation for engineers is
mandatory.
Supervisory and senior positions in this unit group require experience.
Basic Information
Nature of Work
Electrical and Electronics Engineers design, plan, research, evaluate and
test electrical and electronic equipment and systems. They are employed by
electrical utilities, communications companies, manufacturers of electrical
and electronic equipment, consulting firms, and by a wide range of
manufacturing, processing and transportation industries and government.
