Canada still rated best place to live
But U.N. report criticizes record on child poverty
By Allan Thompson
Toronto Star Ottawa Bureau
OTTAWA - Canada has been ranked by the United Nations as the best country
in the world in which to live - for the fourth year in a row.
But the annual report of the United Nations Development Program raises
serious concerns about Canada's poor record on child poverty and treatment
of aboriginal people.
Canada tops the list of 175 countries ranked according to the U.N. agency's
``human development index,'' which takes into account life expectancy,
literacy, school enrollment, gross domestic product and education.
The top 10 countries, in order, are Canada, France, Norway, the United
States, Iceland, The Netherlands, Japan, Finland, New Zealand and Sweden.
Sierra Leone is ranked as the worst place to live.
