The following fellowships and grants are for the 1998-99 academic year.
The AAUW Educational Foundation has helped more than 6,800 women reach
their personal and professional goals through a variety of fellowships and
grants:
* American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates writing their
dissertations and scholars seeking postdoctoral/research leave funds.
Applicants must be U.S citizens or permanent residents. One-year
postdoctoral/research leave fellowships, dissertation fellowships, and
summer postdoctoral/research leave fellowships are offered.
* Career Development Grants are for women who are in the early stages of
graduate studies preparing to re-enter the work force, change careers,
or advance their current careers.
* Community Action Grants provide seed money to individual women and
AAUW branches and states for programs or nondegree research projects
that promote education and equity for women and girls.
* Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowships, designed to promote gender
equity in K-12 public schools, are awarded to full-time K-12 women
teachers with at least three consecutive years of full-time teaching
experience.
* International Fellowships for full-time graduate or postgraduate study
or research in the United States are awarded to women who are not U.S.
citizens or permanent residents.
* Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded in designated fields
where women's participation has been low.
You or an exceptional woman you know may be eligible for one of the AAUW
Educational Foundation fellowships or grants. All applicants must have
demonstrated scholarly excellence. Preference goes to women whose civic,
community, or professional work shows a commitment to advancing the welfare
of women and girls. Women of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
The AAUW Educational Foundation is currently seeking panelists for the
International Fellowships and American Fellowships awards panels.
Information on panel membership is available on this site. Vitae
applications must be postmarked by Jan. 15, 1998. Vitae postmarked after
that date will be held for future appointments.

American Fellowships
1998-99 Academic Year
American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates writing their
dissertations and scholars seeking postdoctoral/research leave funds.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The AAUW
Educational Foundation places no restrictions on place or field of the
project or age of the applicant. Applicants are evaluated on their
scholarly excellence, teaching experience, and active commitment to helping
women and girls through service in their community, profession, or field of
research. Three types of American Fellowships are available:
* One-year postdoctoral/research leave fellowships are for women who
will have earned a doctorate by Nov. 15, 1997. Ten fellowships are
available: three each in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and
natural sciences, and one designated specifically for a woman of
color.
* Dissertation fellowships are for women who will complete the writing
of their dissertations between July 1, 1998, and June 30, 1999.
Applicants are expected to receive a doctoral degree by the end of the
fellowship year. To qualify, they must have completed all course work,
passed all preliminary exams, and had their dissertation research
proposal (or plan) approved by Nov. 15, 1997. Students holding a
fellowship for the writing of a dissertation in the year prior to the
AAUW Educational Foundation fellowship year are not eligible.
Fellowships may not be used to fund extensive research. Scholars may
apply up to two times for a dissertation fellowship on the same topic.
This category is open to applicants in all fields of study except
engineering. (Engineering applicants, please see Selected Professions
Fellowships.)
* Summer fellowships for postdoctoral/research leave are for women
faculty at colleges and universities who are excellent teachers and
whose teaching loads limit active research. Time must be available for
eight weeks of summer research. Scholars with strong publishing
records should seek other funding or apply for the one-year
postdoctoral/research leave fellowships. Six summer fellowships are
available in 1998-99.
One-year postdoctoral/research leave
fellowship stipend $27,000
Dissertation fellowship stipend $14,500

Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowships, designed to promote gender equity in
K-12 public schools, are awarded by the AAUW Educational Foundation to
full-time K-12 women teachers with at least three consecutive years of
