Asia/Pacific Scholars Program
-----------------------------
The Asia/Pacific Scholars Program is a fellowship program designed to
identify and support the very best students and future leaders of the
Asia/Pacific region in their pursuit of graduate degrees at Stanford
University. A full Fellowship will provide for basic tuition and fees, a
stipend, program costs and an economy-class round-trip air-ticket from
your home country to Stanford. Full Fellowships are currently only
available to citizens of the People's Republic of China or Hong Kong SAR
who have graduated from a university in China or Hong Kong. Other
successful applicants to the Program may be eligible to receive a $5,000
fellowship.
Whether your interest is in science and technology, medicine or
engineering, law, international affairs, art or music, whether you come
from the United States, Indonesia or China, if you see yourself as a
potential leader in your chosen profession, and it is your clear
intention to pursue your career in your own country, you are eligible to
apply for this program as long as your country of origin is in Asia or
North America.
This program is administered by the Asia/Pacific Research Center and the
Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. The program
is designed to foster a commitment to the emerging Pacific community.
Program activities will build knowledge of the diverse cultures and
underlying dynamics of social, political, economic, and technological
change in the Asia/Pacific region. A/P Scholars will also have an
opportunity to build professional skills and personal networks, thereby
preparing themselves for regional and global leadership positions in
their chosen profession. Like the Rhodes Scholars program at Oxford
University, designation as an A/P Scholar at Stanford University will
become a lifelong association.
A/P Scholars must be enrolled in regular graduate or professional degree
programs at Stanford. Program activities in the first year of
affiliation will include a regular dinner/seminar series on topics
related to Asia and the United States; periodic meetings with leading
educators, scientists, officials, and business people in the Bay Area
and visitors to campus; the presentation of graduate research; a trip to
Washington in the spring to meet with top United States government
officials and Asian diplomats; and internship opportunities. A/P
Scholars in their second year are expected to mentor first years and
participate in conferences and round-table discussions on topics of
relevance to the Program. In succeeding years, A/P Scholars will be
invited to special events on campus. A long-term objective of the
program is to include regional briefings in Asia that draw upon the
expertise and contacts of former A/P Scholars.
