TEXT OF THE APPLICATION
IZZAK WALTON KILLAM MEMORIAL POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP
The aim of the above named Postdoctoral Fellowship is to attract scholars
of superior research ability who have graduated within the last three
years; the fellowship is not intended for people already well established
in their discipline. If your doctoral degree is from the University of
Alberta, you are normally not eligible for this fellowship. If you are
currently hold or have held another named postdoctoral fellowship from any
institution or if you will be on sabbatical leave, you are not eligible to
apply for this fellowship. If you are currently hold or have held a
postdoctoral fellowship that is funded from a research grant, you may apply
for a Killam Fellowship. Fellowships may be awarded in departments without
doctoral programs, but only if the facilities are adequate. In
departments with no doctoral programs, there must be research of at least
this level being carried on; departments must be able to provide
leadership to Fellowship winners.
There is one competition annually for these Fellowship. The complete
application must be directly sent to the Department at the University of
Alberta which you wish to pursue your studies and take up the fellowship.
No documentation should be sent to the Faculty of Graduate studies and
research. Fellowship applications are complied and reviewed by the
department, which in turn makes a recommendation to the Postdoctoral
Fellowship Committee. Note that departments have limits on the number of
nominations they can put forward.
A COMPLETE APPLICATION MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
(1) Curriculum Vitae (I will explain to you what to include in it later on)
(2) Official copies of all your University transcripts. Photocopies are
not acceptable. All documents submitted in english, as well as the
original language in which they are written.
(3) A statement of your proposed research, not exceeding 81/2 X 11 inch
typed page. state what you hope to accomplish during the period of the
award. These statements will be adjucated by academics from wide variety
of fields. The description of your research should be intelligible to
non-specialists as well as to specialists.
(4) A statement of your research experience, no more that two 81/2X11 inch
typed pages.
(5) A list of any academic honors ar awards received ( fellowships,
awards,...etc.)
(6) A listing of papers appearing in refereed publications or conference
proceedings, beginning with the most recent publications of which you are
an author of co-author and which are published, in press, or/and accepted
for publications in refereed journals should be listed. For papares in
press (i.e. accepted) indicate the date of acceptance by the editor. Begin
each entry on a new line and state the full authorship, the year, the
title, the name and the volume of the journal, and the first and the last
page numbers. The authorship should be identical to that of the original
publication. List papers submitted, papers in non-referred journals,
reports, abstracts, etc. after the refereed publications. Do not send
publications. Use 81/2 X 11 inch typed pages.
(7) Arrange for three letters of Appraisal to be sent to the department, at
least two of which must be from persons familiar with your academic work.
Letters of Appraisal should contain a substantive evaluation of your
ability and not be merely testimonial (make sure they talk about your
research work). fellowships are intended primarily for those who are
seeking to establish themselves in their chosen field. (You should get the
reference letters sent by an overnight courier.. Otherwise you might miss
the deadline of Jan. 2, 1998)
(8) A half-page statement from an individual within the proposed
department. This statement should indicate the benefits that would accrue
from the proposed collaboration. (this I will do myself once you inform me
that you have sent a complete application)
YOU MUST ENSURE THAT ALL APPLICATION MATERIAL AND THE LETTERS OF APPRAISAL
ARE RECEIVED IN THE DEPARTMENT NO LATER THAN 2 JANUARY 1998. INCOMPLETE
APPLICATIONS CANNOT BE CONSIDERED.

Your Curriculum Vitae should include
(a) Personal information (name, birthday, martial status,
nationality....etc.)
(b) Education levels (undergraduate, and graduate schools, if possible
list the names of the research supervisors and the thesis titles, dates of
graduations)
(c) Work experience (name of places, include teaching experience also)
(d) Research skills (this is one of the most important listing.. Include
the tools and the name of the techniques, programs, equipment, machining,
experimental skills, diagnostic,....skills that you have please expand on
this list minor thing that my appear minor to you might be of importance
to others (i.e. Z-scan, image processing, C++. etc., ultrafast lasers,
optical detection,.....)
(e) List of talks and presentations (indicate the title of the talk and the
place, date)
(f) list of names students supervised
(g) list of the your original contributions to research (why was your
previous research important)
(h) list of publications
(i) list of the names and the addresses (include e-mail) of the people who
are writing reference letters for you and indicate the date they were
requested to do so.
(j)List of courses you have thought, organized,... etc. (if possible)
(k) any other things that you think are important
(l
) list of the journals that you have refereed in (i.e. if you had to
referee an article for publications)
