询问了在 UMass CS 的师兄师妹, 答复如下,
贴出来给大家以及后来人做个参考.

看了他们的回信, 我只记住三件事:
Infoseek是他们系的CIIR搞的,
学校所在的Amherst的downtown比照澜院还小,
Amherst应读为Amerst.

  CS in UMass-Amherst is really a good department. I think it's rank is

  about 20. Actually, if this department is in some famous U, it's rank

  should be in top 10.


  What is your target? Sure to get a Ph.D or want to find a job after

  master? If you prefer the former, then RA is better for you. You can

  start your Ph.D work soon and it is good for you. But if you just want to


  get a master, then choose TA, and be a TA for 3-4 semesters and then get

  out of school. Life with TA will be easy and you feel comfortable because

  you don't owe anything to anybody.


  There are several group is good. I am working in Networks Group. This is

  the best group in this department. The two bosses are very good. One is

  distinguish professor, really smart, very famous in industry. The other is


  the Chair of the department.


  The second is LASER: Lab of Advanced Software Engineer Research. The two

  bosses of this group are good. But I don't their work is interesting.

  Another one is CIIR: Center of Intellegent Information Retrieval. Infoseek


  was their product. Ph.D in these two group will be fast. Maybe 5 years.


  I don't like any AI group here. AI is tederious to me, but maybe different


  for you. Maybe Vision group will ask you to be their RA. To my

  acknowledge, many of students there got their Ph.D degree after many

  years, at least 5 years, maybe near 10 years, average 7 years. Ed is

  tough, Manmatha is worse, but Al is good.


  Life in Amherst is really comfortable. Amherst(h is silence, so pronounce

  艾默斯特) is a peaceful town. I like this town. Rent for two bedroom could


  be around 600, but you can share with another student. Your stipend should


  be more than $17000/year, enough for you and your wife if you have one.

  Congratulations! I heard that you will come couple of weeks ago. Amherst

  is a good place for study. Quiet, full of students, the downtown of

  Amherst is no bigger than Zhao Lan Yuan. And there is lots of snow in

  winter. Actually it is still snowing recently.... And Umass is a good

  university for obtaining your degrees fast, especially the MS.


  I think if you are confident in your oral English, and you want a PH.D, to


  be a RA is a good choice. If you want a Ph.D. degree, you could select the


  graduate project ASAP when being a RA. If you don't want a Ph.D. and hope

  to graduate asap, being a TA is wise. You could choose the easiest course

  to teach. It won't take you much time....
