     University of Rochester is a pretty good
private school in U.S. it is a tiny one, with extremely good music
school, fairly good business school and medical school, and the world's
biggest laser lab & optical center.  but the engineering school is not
very strong, because of its tiny size. the city of Rochester is pretty
decent, compary to west lafayette :-), but the black population is also
higher, the downtown area is not that good. the residents are relatively
rich, because of the 4 big componies: Kodak, Xerox, Bosh&lone and
Corning. these remarks are what i can get after comparing the situation
of lafayette, when i first went to Rochester, i felt like the city was
not as good as it should be.  it is very cold in winter, i have seen the
most beautiful snow in my whole life there.

if you want to share a 2-bedroom apartment with someone eles, your rent
will be like $250-$320/mon, cost of food per month should be in the
range of $80-150 if you cook youself. if you have little entertainment,
then you still can save some money each month.  if your future wife
comes with you, things will be a little
different, the rent for a good one-bedroom apartment is around $500.
there are lots of chinese couples share apartment in 2 or 3 bedroom
apartments, that will save a lot.

you are welcome, however, don't be too optimistic, US schools are not as
good or as beautiful as what we dreamed in china. sometime, things don't
turn out to be good  and you have to bite the bullet.  don't be scared
by my words.  you will be fine.
