   NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE

   Admission To Master's and Doctoral Programmes (By Research), 1998-9

   The National University of Singapore invites applications to its
   master's and doctoral programmes by research, commencing 5 January
   1998.  These programmes are available in the Faculties of
   Architecture & Building, Arts & Social Sciences, Business
   Administration, Dentistry, Engineering, Law, Medicine and Science,
   and selected research institutes.  Successful candidates will
   undertake research in a chosen field of study under the guidance of
   supervisors and write up a thesis for examination.  They may also
   be required to attend and pass courses.

   For admission as a master's candidate, the applicant must have a
   relevant bachelor's degree with honours and the ability to pursue
   research in the proposed field of study.

   For admission to doctoral degrees, the applicant must have a
   relevant bachelor's degree with honours or a master's degree or the
   degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery or the degree of
   Bachelor of Dental Surgery, and the training and ability to pursue
   research in the proposed field of study.

   The minimum and maximum periods of candidature for both full-time
   and part-time candidates are one and three years for master's
   degrees, and two and five years for doctoral degrees.

   NUS Research Scholarships

   The University offers attractive research scholarships which
   provide full-time master's and doctoral candidates with a monthly
   stipend ranging from S$1200 to S$1500 and a fee subsidy.  No bond
   is required.

   Research scholars may also be asked to assist in the work of
   Departments, for which they can earn up to S$16,000 (gross) per
   annum.

   There are two intakes of candidates, in January and July/October
   1998.  Applications for the January 1998 intake close on 15 May
   1997 and applicants will be informed of the outcome of their
   applications by 1 October 1997.  The closing date for the
   July/October 1998 intake is 15 December 1997, and applicants will
   be notified by 1 May 1998.

   Areas of research undertaken by Faculties can be found in the NUS
   Directory of  Research[1].  Applicants may also write to the
   relevant Faculty at the address given below, for information.

   Applicants who are also interested in applying for the NUS Research
   Scholarships should ask for the "Research Scholarship & Higher
   Degree Application Form".  Application forms for admission and
