The William and Mary School of Law is a full-time, three-year program of study in legal
education. Required first-year courses include studies in constitutional law, contracts, torts, civil
procedure, property, criminal law, legal skills, and statutory law. Prior to graduation, students
must take a second year of legal skills, which includes professional ethics. Through simulated law
firms, students in the Legal Skills Program experience and refine many lawyering skills such as
intervieing, negotiation, legal briefing, and trial techniques. The law school provides a wide
variety of externships, including: the Legal Aid Clinic and the Corporate Practice, Employee
Relations, Attorney General Practice, and the Virginia Court of Appeals Externships. In
addition, second- and third-year students are encouraged to work in a variety of legal settings,
such as private firms and public law offices and legal clinics. The curriculum is enriched by the
Institute of Bill of Rights Law, a privately funded organization. The Institute's central focus is
scholarship and education on freedom of speech and of the press, with interests also in legal
history, legal writing, and professional responsibility. The law school also houses Courtroom 21,
the world's most technologically advanced courtroom. The School of Law at the College of
William and Mary is a public school with a total enrollment of approximately 525 students. The
nearly 70 faculty members are a mix of tenure track professionals and ajunct professors who
bring their legal experience to the classroom. The seven full-time librarians assist the students
with a library of 325,000 volumes or equivalents and several legal and nonlegal computer-
generated databases including LEXIS and WESTLAW, as well as other CD-ROM information

Because of the relevance to law of the fields of literacy study such as narratology and
hermeneutics, the Department of English and the Law School introduced a mater's program in
English and law in 1991. The degree combines an M.A. in the Department of English with a
minor in law. The program is open only to students already admitted to the Law School.

The program is designed to afford lawyers, primarily from the United States, an opportunity to
