The Ph.D. Program in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) at Harvard
Medical School is an interdepartmental program of the Division of Medical
Sciences. The over 200 faculty members are drawn from five basic science
departments at Harvard Medical School; Biological Chemistry and Molecular
Pharmacology, Cell Biology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology, Genetics
and Pathology, as well as from affiliated hospitals, including the
Massaschusetts General Hospital, Children's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute, Beth Israel Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. BBS

The Mount Sinai Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) exists in the
setting of a still relatively new medical school which has developed
strong, innovative and interactive MD and PhD curricula, and has been
enjoying a period of especially active growth -- both with respect to
thoughtful curriculum development and major additions to the molecularly
oriented research faculty. This spirit of growth and the cooperative
interactions that are part of it provide an atmosphere that particularly
fosters the training of the creative and somewhat unusual MSTP student.

The Quinnipiac postgraduate option for Pathologists' Assistants a
full-time, two year program that combines rigorous academics with
supervised clinical experiences. Quinnipiac's program received the highest
marks possible - five year accreditation - in a recent evaluation by the
American Association of Pathologists' Assistants, and is recognized by the
National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences
(N.A.A.C.L.S.). It is one of only three master's level programs in the
United States.

The program in Experimental Pathology as described here, primarily caters
to non-medical graduates for whom the Ph.D. or M.A. is a "terminal degree";
for non-medical graduates who then proceed to Medical School and take
M.S.'s, and for Medical Graduates who wish to obtain formal training in

designed on an individual basis, influenced by choice of research projects.

The program of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in
medical pathology has been designed to provide the student with an
all-inclusive background on the mechanisms and events of human disease at
the organ, tissue, cellular and molecular levels. Concurrent with the
didactic course work, training is provided in the design of laboratory
experiments and in the performance of state-of-the-art laboratory
procedures. These experiences equip the student with the knowledge and
tools required for conducting an independent research project in a
laboratory, directed by an advisor of his or her choice. Upon completion of
the program, which includes a dissertation containing two or more
manuscripts suitable for publication, the student is prepared for the
pursuit of a productive career in academic pathology and research.
