The degree program requires a core of mass communication research and theory classes and an emphasis from one of the
school's specialties: newspaper and broadcast journalism, public relations, advertising, and radio/television programming and
management. The courses in each emphasis encourage students to apply the core concepts and to prepare for careers in the

There are two types of M.A. degrees, one of which requires a thesis. The nonthesis M.A. is particularly suitable for a career in
the public or private sector. The culmination of the nonthesis M.A. is an oral examination on a chosen topic during the last
semester of the program. The M.A. thesis degree is most appropriate as preparation for a doctoral program and dissertation.
After enrolling in 6 hours of thesis, the student defends the completed thesis in an oral exam.

Master of Professional Writing Program is one of the nation's few graduate writing degrees offering concentrations in highly
marketable forms -- novel, stageplay, teleplay, screenplay, and the non-fiction book. In addition, the curriculum offers an
emphasis in poetry. The Program, which has included such noted faculty as playwright William Inge, novelist William Goyen,
and poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, provides an exemplary atmosphere in intimate workshop settings. Graduates have a high
degree of success in film, stage, and publishing careers.
