Asian students can
work longer in US
By Sam Zeng
ACCORDING to guidelines announced by the US
Department of Justice, some Asian students in
America can work more and study less.
The decision was made by Secretary of State
Albright to lighten the heavy burden imposed on
students and their parents due to the Asian
currency turmoil.
The new guidelines state that students from
Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South
Korea and Thailand can work more than the
previous limit of twenty hours.
The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)
announced that they will renew the students
visas even if they have not completed their
courses, so long as they are still registered at
their schools.
The INS estimated that the new rule will suit
the approximately 80000 students from Asia.
Southeast Asian currencies devalued sharply
against the US dollar, causing economic hardship
for students from this region.
Those who think they qualify for special
assistance should tell their schools that they
come from one of the five countries and are
having economic difficulties so they would like
to work longer hours to earn more money.
