HI I am a student in University of Chicago, and my wife is in China
right now. She got the F-2 visa this morning, and it is her first time
to apply. Before she apply for visa, I read the article here and feel
very upset since all news are bad news. But this morning she meet no
difficulty, very smoothly. My fellowship-tuition=14,000$ not so high.
And my personal fund is about 3,000$. She works for the bigest company
in Tailand before and she could speak English fairly well. I guess that
may be part of the reason.
I think there must be some difficulty in obtaining F-2 visa, but the
situation is not so bad as it appeared here. I suppose the reason is that
when somebody get the visa, he or she will not bother to write article
here, while those who don't tends to visit here and write articles.
As a result, the information here is biased.
Here I sincerely ask those who or whose spouse get the visa successfully
share there experience with others since it is more valuable than those
failure experience, and I wish all the couples still separated now could
be reunited in the near future.
One statement: I borrow this ID from a friend also in UC who used to be
a student here and may not enjoy good reputation in BBS :-) so don't
relate me to that guy if you know him.
If anyone wants to ask me some question, please email:
zhu@galton.uchicago.edu
It would be my pleasure to help any seperated couples to be reunited
·¢ÐÅÕ¾: BBS ˮľÇ廪վ (Thu Nov 27 01:28:54 1997)

HI Yesterday many people emailed me to ask for "detail" Here is the detail
I know. I wish it could be helpful.
I have statement from citybank which said I have some money in it.
I don't remember the exact number, but it certainly less than 4,000 $
since I didn't borrow money from others and that is the "true" finanical
situation of mine.
My wife answer the question in English, and there are only three very
simple question. How long have you got married? When did your
husband go to US? The 3nd one I forgot, also sth like that.
I don't think it really matter. It seems he didn't check the bank
statement very carefully and there is no question about job or come-back.

About my I-20, I have 37,000 from the school, 23,000 for tuition and fees,
personal fund required is about 1,200 $. Based on the living expense in
Chicago this figure is not high at all.

I don't know the
details of the form she submit. Later she told me that there are only one
girl before her who got visa, so the situation may still tough. But if you
have enough money on your I-20, you may try, there is chance.
I think before holiday they tend to give visa more generaous. So why not
try before Chrismas?
wish you and your wife have good luck!
·¢ÐÅÕ¾: BBS ˮľÇ廪վ (Fri Nov 28 08:03:01 1997)

My wife got her F-2 visa this month. There are only three people
did it that day. But their backgrounds are very different. I study
MBA in Y and only have $10000 grant. So my self-support is $40000.
In many People's opinions, my wife had little opportunity to get
her F-2. But eventually, she did it in the window of Ambassy's gate.
The other lucky girl is from Anderson, her husband study CS in Princeton
and has full scolarship. She was refused a week ago. This time she
provided her salary certificate of about $2000/month in Anderson.
So she got her visa right after my wife. The most important point to
get F-2 is how to persuade consular that you have enough money to live
in US. Everyone has opportunity to get it even though you have
no schorlarship.

I benefit from Tsinghua BBS many times, thank for those who can provide
useful information for Chinese students. If there is someone has quesstions
, feel free to mail me. I wish I can be of help.
·¢ÐÅÕ¾: BBS ˮľÇ廪վ (Mon Dec 1 06:03:19 1997)

I recieved some replies after my letter F2 experience in Beijing. Many
people want to know some detailed background of my wife's application.
I think that my background is too special to fit for general applicants.
But the crux to get visa is how to make your application sound reasonable.
One of my friend's wife experienced many bitter refuses. Eventually she
got her visa depending on a letter wrote by his husband to describe how
deep their love is. Obviously the consular was moved because he read the
letter long time. And he even didn't read the other material and issued
her visa.
The amount of your schorship only acted as the reason why you aes refused.
I menioned in my last letter that I only had $10000 grant and had no tuition
waiver. So I selfsupport about $40000. When I apply for my F1, I convinced
the consular I can and have enough money to support my MBA study with
confidence. My wife also did it by this way. And I see many syudents' spouse
also get F2 visa under the situation they have no enough financial support
from unversity.
So , those loving and bitter Chinese students andtheir spouses, brace up,
well prepare for your application. Everyone have ability and right to get
F2. Even if you lose allof your hope, you still have many choices, such as B1.
I know many people get to US by this way. But it could spend too many money,
so it does not fit for people have no enough money. Anyway, try your best,
try! If anyone need help, I can be of use. Feel free, maybe we had already
known each other.

Good luck, our poor overseas students!

My wife got her F2 visa last week. Before go to apply for visa, my wife and me
read alll the papers about F2 in bbs of tsinghua. I think we should thank for
the friends on bbs. Since I got the permission to send letter to hte bbs just
today, I feel sorry that I have not do this earlier.

Now I will talk about the process of my wife's F2 visa. In our I20 form, the
7a is about 25000, 7b about 11500 and 7c about 5500, the 8a(personal fund) is
about 6000 and the 8b is about 40000. My wife got her visa at the gate. It is
the old man who she met. He just look at I20 and F156 or maybe something else
I don't remmember clearly but it is not important, I think. The questions he
asked are "What your husband's name, When do you get married, when do your
husband go to USA , do you miss your husband". I think these questions are
easy to answer and the answers should be clear and exact. He asked in Chinese
and I think it is because wife saied "ni3 hao3" in Chinese before he began to
ask.

The above is the detail. I think the important things are 8b-(7a+7b+7c) is not
low, the schoool is good and then your carefully prepare, being confident and
the last, luck. I am in Norhtwestern Univ. AS I know only one or two spauses
of the Norhtwestern's chinese students do not get the F2 visa. The reasons may
be: 1.Northwestern Univ. is not bad; 2. The 7a,7b,7c and 8b-7 are all high.
8b -7 here are all about 15000. the one whose wife do not get F2 is because
she go to apply for visa with their child the first time and the second time
she
(continuou with my first letter). She come alone the second time and she met
the lady from taiwan. I know some spouses here were turned down at thire first
time and they got F2 at thire second time. Some of them changed the I20 form.
they asked thire advicor to give them three months additional financial aid
since they originally got 9 month fellowship or TA. Some of them have 12 month
financial aid originally and they just using the materials for the second
time application and they got it. They told me the first time the people even
do not look at the I20 (the time is at the end of Oct.) and I remember at
that time only one from Northwestern Univ. got visa. But after Holloween,
most people here got it.

As I heard here, not only the application for F2 become difficult, the
application for Green Card also become difficult. Maybe America began to
notice that many chinese people come and stay here.

My suggestions is that you shoould prepare carefully and thoroughly before
go to apply for F2. When go to apply, be confident. If you yourself do not
believe you have the right to meet your spouse, who will believe ? The
America will never say "no, you can't go to see your husband", because this
is their beleif in the religion and in their mind , and they just find some
other reasons to turn down the applications. If you have been turned down,
just do something you can. (to be continued)
don't just warry, do some thing to make your situation the best you can. If
the applicaiton was turned down, you should still do more, at least you can
apply again and again.

You can pray to God for your good luck. You may not believe in God but it will
not hurt anybody. If you really love your spouse, you need to do anything
really helpful and good to your love. I can tell you I pray all the day at
F2 visa. Here is my suggestion:

Application form 156, I-20, A letter from the university of I-20,
Marriage book, Bank certificates, Bank balance,
Invitation letter from your spouse, visa copy of your spouse,
Your staff card, A vacation letter from your institute (usually 3 months),
Your salary sheet, ...

Anyhow bring whatever you can get, which you think it is useful.
Of cause it will change for different cases. A girl behind me,
that day I applied for the visa, told me that her materials were not
checked, and no question was asked, before she got issued. Of cause
she prepared a lot of things for the interview.

I made a trick. I wrote a letter to explain about my case to the
officer with all other materials submitted. I was refused before,
and the officer didn't want to listen to my explanation. I think
that as they don't want to listen, I had better to allow them
to read. It really worked that day. The officer read my letter
from beginning to the end. I wrote I missed my wife too much.
After reading, there was a smile on his face. I knew I was lucky
then. I got passed.

I hope all F2 people get their visa in the near future.
Prepare the best to go to the embassy. I hope my suggestion
can help them, I know the hard life after they left their
jobs for the passport.
