hi, jjfjj
thanks a lot for your inquiry and good wishes to me before
the visa application.Sorry,I should have told you the result
first. Hope my experience is of some use to you and to others
especially those majored in MSE.
The result is I got my visa yesterday.I think the procedure
is not difficult but indeed careful preparation is needed.
I spent one day on 踩点,two days on reading the essential part
of BBS and preparing the answer, even academic English。
The most troublesome thing is that my major--materials sci. & eng.
is among the 14 sensitive areas, and the list contains almost
all kinds of materials I can think of. I also have extra pressure
since two of my future classmates at Cornell,Dept. of MSE have met
troubles in getting the visa, one had her docu suspended for two
weeks and the other hasn't got his visa even after two weeks' waiting,
and his future research field is semiconductor nothing to do with
military use. Thus I plan to find a new and special field which is far
from any military application, then I choose biomaterials: hard tissue
replacement implants.(but Cornell doesnot have this field)To be
familiar with the field,I read some review
articles and keep the key points and words in heart.
The night before the interview was very hot,I couldnot
fall asleep until very late and woke up at 5:30 am
Sitting on the taxi, I hadn't any kind of special feeling, just like
to go out for shopping.Arrive at the embassy at 7:40 with my classmates.
Dirty and crowded outside the gate, dustwomen were sweeping the road.
hardly to find space to stand. My friend was a little carsick.
finally I entered the hall at about 9:30,also crowded but feel much better.
I stood straight in the front part of the queue observing the visa officers.
the bald man is really quite nice. He didnot reject anyone. My friend got
the visa within 40 sec, although her sister is also in US.
Acturally, the 25 or 35 FAQs are really very useful. Thanks for o07 and jiafie.
I think most of the questions the officer asked are from the list.
visa officer(O): nut-brown hair and middle-aged American man.
Those are the questions he asked.
M: good morning Sir and may you a happy July 4.
O: thanks. your documents.
O: You will graduate from THU.
M: yeah.
O: why do you choose US?
M: Since it is widely known that US has more advanced technology and
graduate education than China.
O: I mean why other counties like Germany, Japan or England.
M: Acturally I did apply for Cambridge, but they didnot give me
full financial aid.
O: how do you think about Cambridge?
M: a very excellent and beautiful university.
O: why do you choose Cornell?
M: for it is a world-famous, first class univ. and it ranks top 10
in my major.
O: really?
M: yeah.
O: which one is better,Cambridge or Cornell? Will you choose Cambridge if
you got the aid.
M: (begin to feel nervous)I think they are more or else the same.
O: why not Germany or Japan, you think US is more advanced than those
countries?
M: yeah.
O: What is your major.
M: mat. sci. & engr.
O: what's your research area?
M: biomedical materials
O: give me an example of tha in Cornell? applications.
M: artifical teeth. (I think hard and found this word is easy to understand
and safe one day before the interview.)
O: (feel interesting and pointing to his teeth)
What will you do when you come back to China?
M: to continue my reseach.
O: How much can you earn?
M: One hundred thousand Yuan per year.
O: how can you earn that much?
M: you know China has such a large population.
O: ( hand the docu to me,point at the GRE score) did you ** cheating **?
M: I did it myself! acturally it is just an average score in THU.
O: really? I think it is quite high.
M: I devoted a lot of time on it.
O: for how long?
M: about one year.
O: did you ** new oriental?
M: yeah.
O: how much did you pay?
M: six hundred.
O: for one program?
M: yeah.
O: ( at last give me the yellow card )go to number 10
M: thanks.
My suggestions:
1 be prepared, read the essential part of BBS
find a safe area and get familiar with it.
avoid any word that will cause trouble.
2 make the answers short and reasonable,no matter
it is true or not.
3 ask your future university for help if you meet
trouble. they are very glad to help you.
Finally, I want to thank all my friends for their good
wishes to me jjfjj,ATM,bumper,wamx,apple,floro,my Cornell
alumini,annie...
Wish jjfjj and all of you a very good luck!!
